Shotokan is a style of karate, developed from various martial arts by Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957) and his son Gigo (Yashitaka Funakoshi) (1906 – 1945). Gichin Funakoshi was bone in Okinawa and is widely credited with popularinging “Karate do” through a series of public demonstration, and by promoting the development of university karate clubs, including those at keio, waseda, chuo, Hitotruborhi (Shadai), Takushoku, Horei and Gakurhuin.

In the past, people practiced this martial art in many countries. Shotokan is still popular in modern culture. Karate is primarily a combat skort done with bare hands. That the meaning of Kare-te : empty hand. So then the only weapons that can be used against a fighter are ports of the body.

Shotokan karate remains firmly rooted in a strong martial arts tradition, emphasizing lifetime training for a healthy mind and body, rather them strictly as a sport.
